Point Lay Study Area

NNA-IRPS research teams visited Point Lay in June and August 2022 to study permafrost properties and ground-ice conditions and to install ground temperature sensors for long-term monitoring in and around the community. In all, 28 permafrost boreholes were drilled (10 up to 3-m deep and 19 up to 5.5-m) and 27 temperature monitoring stations were installed (13 near infrastructure and 14 in natural areas). Not shown: We also acquired high-resolution drone imagery to map the extent of ice-rich yedoma that is highly susceptible to thaw and terrain subsidence. Zoom in for more detail.
